Literacy is our foundation

On April 23, we released a video spotlighting reading and literacy at Westview. A focus on literacy doesn’t just happen; it takes careful planning and intentional actions.

Teachers at Westview have embraced a journey of growth in literacy instruction through dedicated training aligned with the Science of Reading.

Teachers have received Orton-Gillingham (OG) training from IMSE, deepening their understanding of structured, multisensory approaches to phonics and decoding. In addition, targeted professional development in morphology has strengthened their ability to teach word structure and meaning explicitly and cumulatively.

Guided by Schmoker’s Instructional Design Components, Westview educators have thoughtfully crafted lessons that prioritize clarity, modeling, and frequent checks for understanding.

Their commitment is evident in the time and effort they’ve invested in building comprehensive curriculum maps and meaningful assessments, ensuring instruction is systematic, explicit, and responsive to student needs. As a result, structured literacy is not just a theory but a growing practice in Westview classrooms, thanks to the hard work and dedication of its teachers.
